Topic 3. What is the difference between British English and Australian English?

Today, the most widely spoken language in the world is English. However, in English there are also many sub-branches such as British English and Australian English. There are many similarities between these two languages, but there are still some differences. Here, we will go through these differences to better understand British English and Australian English.

The first is the accent. As we all know, the majority of British settlers in Australia to live are from London or Ireland. Besides, Australian English is also influenced by Americans. This combination is the main reason why Australian English accents change and differ from British English.

Next is spelling. Due to the influence and mixing of British English and American English, we can see the difference of Australian English. Specifically, words in shorter Australian English are spelled like British English spellings, while longer words tend to be spelled like American English.

Finally, there is the grammar of Australian English with a mixture of American English and British English. This is also partly because American television programs and computer software blend with the common spoken language of British English.

Above are some of the major differences between British English and Australian English. In particular, the difference in accent makes the Australian accent famous around the world. These differences make Australian English and British English interesting to study and research.
